About the Douglas A. Henley Memorial Golf Outing
The motto of The Lapeer Optimist Club is "Friend of Youth." Its current more than 55 members are a fun-loving, compatible cross section of the business, social and cultural life of the Lapeer-area community whose single objective is to encourage the development of youth, in the belief that giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well being of the community.
No one better embodies the Lapeer Optimist motto better than Doug Henley. Doug was a charter member of the Lapeer Optimist Club, joining in 1958. He served the club and the community until his untimely death in 1975. it was Doug's vision in the 1970's that transformed the former First Baptist Church into the Henley Recreation Center which was the forerunner of the current Lapeer Community Center.
To say that Doug was dedicated to the enrichment of youth in Lapeer would be accurate and at the same time does not say nearly enough about the myriad contributions he made to this community as a businessman, community leader and as a friend.
The Lapeer Optimist Club named their annual golf outing in Doug's honor 42 years ago as a tribute to the man who we knew as our friend and as a reminder of our own duty to the youth of our community.
